@vt75
Agree and disagree
Front grille may look a bit odd but doesn't feel like Audi IMHO, easy to get used to
Maybe the facelifted GRL10/11/15 would fix that
Also fog lights don't have any Audi element at all

The problem with this GRL10/11/15 is the entire body design which is now more straight-up, as opposed to previous gens which still have the Aristo feel ie. sleek, wide, low form, also interior has less sporty feel

The other thing, Inchcape really should ask for the JDM/USDM style number plate brackets instead of the EUDM style, EU style looks bad IMHO, in fact all HKDM Lexus models should have JDM/USDM-size plates fixed front/rear (eg. those on Camry hybrid)

It just a japs car, who care?
#11 - anon99 :

Jap cars generally have better maintenance record as opposed to EU cars (that is, minus all recall issues)
#12 - jamestcp :

I and my friend both have a 2003 RX 300 (Lexus). The dashboard melt and cracked. The cars were recalled for brake problem. Mine's O2 sensors just dead. I owned the previous generation which did not have the same problems.
#13 - anon99 :
2012-02-19 17:59:06

@jamestcp Maybe cost cutting on certain parts which rendered them not as reliable?

Melted dashboard... never heard of that, but did you subject your vehicle to radiation under bright sun or what? Do this often and those platic parts will age out faster than you'd expect

Brake problem recall? Dunno anything about it so no comment

BTW more GRL10/11 info here

#17 - olddude :

Wow, close to $800K. Probably going to get a Beamer or Audi instead.
#18 - anon99 :
2012-02-21 00:39:19

@olddude
Actually GRL11's price is quite attractive, considering HK spec has many (if not full) options as standard and nothing else (what else?), even some features that are only avaialble on JDM Version L (or higher)
Also standard HKDM sat nav, premium audio (Mark Lev), HUD..., what else can you ask for?

With BMW and Audi you get a list of options that can set you back another $100k at least...

Average HKDM Bimmer models may have just few options (except new 1尻) but definitely no standard sat nav and will cost you 30-40k for that as well as larger wide screen

Audi? Not every vehicle can have sat nav module installed because of incapatibility with HK maps etc. (but most current versions are compatible with HK map data)
Also premium audio (B&O?) will cost you extra too
For instance, for a well-equipeed A6 3.0T probably ~$1M is no escape if a few important options are chosen (premium audio, sport sus, active rear diff)
#19 - olddude :
2012-02-21 01:07:33

Just checked out the Audi S5 over the weekend. The only options were the sport drivetrain upgrades (forgot what they were, I wasn't interested) and the 5 seats downgrade (yup pay to be downgraded but I do need a 5 seater). It was like just under $900K. Not bad la, for something that can go from 0-100Km/hr in about 5 secs. with a big trunk (need that for the kid's bike). If I go for the lessor A5 3.0, it would be much cheaper.

Haven't checked with the Bimmer yet but they do have a long list of options. Really hate it when they nickel and dime you on premium models. I asked about the 550 when they had a road show, heads-up display+sat-nav option was like 6 figures. I drove one with the heads-up nav before and it was fun but I don't think it is worth getting in HK. The all-round parking camera option was pretty stiff too. Anyway, I am looking for a "family" car and probably a 535 or a 335 touring would be more suitable.

Frankly, I can live without sat-nav, they don't work that great in HK anyway. I can live with the Ovi Map on my Nokia phone. As for premium sound system, don't mind having it but the wife won't let me turn it up loud anyway.

Actually, I am more interested in the GS450h, then again Lexus suck big time not to being it in this year. Considering the price of the GS350, the 450h would be like close to a $1M, I guess.

@olddude
Ultimate grade is quite akin to JDM Version L
http://lexus.jp/models/gs/specifications/equipmentlist/equipmentlist01.html

Not sure GRL15 (450h) is a good buy though. Additional electronic motor and battery components mean more maintenance troubles...
But at least it has a dual-function tachometer/power meter, which is good
http://lexus.jp/models/gs/performance/drivemode/images/img_performance_drivemode_04.gif

Meanwhile, not sure about S5 current specs but at ~$830k, not good
BTW you have to pay extra for 5-seater arrangement? Ridiculous......!!
But no, Audi sat nav does not interest me, kind of complicated operation, don't like it

For BM, 535i IMO should suffice. Just add those options (sat nav just for the sake of large screen, rear camera, comfort key[??], M-sport steering wheel w/paddle shift...)
Options are expensive if I were to go for a 5尻 I would definitely add a few so as not to render the vehicle too barebones (but of course those features would sure do me good)

550i now looks like a poor man's M5 IMHO.
One more thing, is 4WS ever available as option on the HKDM 5尻?

Hohoho... I think more than that la

>BTW you have to pay extra for 5-seater arrangement? Ridiculous......!!

The original is the premium sports seats which looks much better than the 5 seater seats. Then again, a 4 seater would not be too practical for us (it would be a family car for us).

>550i now looks like a poor man's M5 IMHO.

I guess you can say that. Drove my friend's 550 once on open highway and some little side streets. Really impressed and just loved the HUD sat nav. The acceleration was so smooth and "effortless", I was going at like 130-140km/hr before knowing it and I was just entering the highway from the entry ramp driving normally without pressing hard on the gas.

Tried fiddling with the display controls during the launch, sorry no Chinese interface selection, only English...
Probably original sat nav is the same, English only just like other Lexus models

But NO, HKDM sat nav firmare is not as advanced as other versions eg. JDM or USDM, so probably no "入電話出地址" feature

BTW HKDM Ultimate grade is pretty much akin to JDM Version L so MV audio should be included on the GRL10 Ultimate

I believe all Ultimate trim levels have ML Audio (sorry for typo), only GRL10 Deluxe (or whatever it's called) has downgraded AV system (standard audio, only 8" mon), but all three show vehicles during the launch were Ultimate grades

You may have to visit the showroom to look at the complete specs/features list, Lexus HK site is very sloppy, brief specs/features list once appeared inside but now I cannot find it anymore

Test-drove the GS350 F-Sport over the weekend. The GS350 F-Sport is on the short-list of cars that I am considering as my next car (currently own a Audi TTS, Golf GT and also driving a company car). Others on the short-list are Audi S4 Advant, Audi S5 Sportback, BMW F30 335i, and the TTRS. The sales and marketing staff of Lexus are very polite and professional. They know the products well. While this is something to be expected in the car retail industry, my personal experience reveals that most car sales do not know the technical specifics of their products, and quite a few of them are down right arrogant (judging “you won’t afford this” ?). Not the case for Lexus.

What differentiates the F-Sport from the Ultimate offering in Hong Kong are mainly the Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) and a special 19” rim that comes as a package with the adaptive suspension. (the Ultimate comes with 18” rims). A more prominent grille (and more to my liking) also makes the F-sport more standout. Looking from the rear, the F-Sport also comes with a very subtle spoiler glued to the trunk cover. In my opinion, this looks cheap and disturbs the rear body line of the GS350. But somehow Lexus wants the F-Sports to be visually different from the front and back. On the side, a “F-Sport” badge serves this purpose.

I must say the Spindle grille looks much better in person than that shown on press photos. Still I think it is overall complicated, and would imagine a small damage on the front bumper is going to cost you dearly.

On the road, the F-Sport drives very well. Lexus has tuned the silky smooth V6 engine to be more aggressive and integrated to this automatic transmission. I took a mild sprint at the Hong Kong Eastern Corridor and experience a very linear and responsive behaviour. The difference between Sport and Sport+ mode was not as drastic as I would expect, but sure the car came to live with more responsive steering and higher shifting points of the controversial 6-speed intelligent transmission. I would expect a 7-speed, or 8-speed automatic transimission is the norm of the day but somehow the sales told me that Lexus engineer has studied this and decided to stick to a 6 speed gearbox. Although this is not as fuel efficient, the GS350 does pick up speed easily all the way up above 5,000 rpm. ( I didn’t try past 5,500 rpm as the test car has just 1,000 km on it and don’t want to be too rude on it). Also, this "totally new" GS350 does not come with Auto Start-Stop function which again, is almost a standard set by Lexus' competitors, giving people a feeling that the GS350 is "one generation behind" at the environmental front.

Throwing the relatively heavy (~1,700kg gross) GS350 into the high speed curve past Taikoo Shing the car remained very stable at relative high speeds. Perhaps the DRS helped and overall there is no drama at all even at speeds that most will not do in Hong Kong. Body roll is very controlled and the suspension, while stiffened at the curves, remain very effective in filtering the bumps and noise. At tighter corner (taking a sharp left entering into Heng Fa Chuen), the F-Sport feel much smaller than the size of the car suggests.

As the GS350 has a NA 3.5 litre engine, it doesn’t give the blast in acceleration as one would expect from a turbo-charged machine. But it does pick up speed easily. However those expecting to out-pace others at the stop light might not be happy.

The quiet environment, legendary of the Lexus brand, is still there, but acoustic-wise the designer has allowed a little bit of the engine sound to come through. The cabin is well appointed with gadgets and luxury all around, but overall it feels a little over-crowded to me. The front seats are the best I have ever been inside a car. The F-sport front seat has 16 ways of adjustment, is ventilated and heated. (The Ultimate seats has 18 ways of adjustment). The top panel just beneath the full length of the windscreen is wrapped with real leather – something I would say is not common in any cars below $1m. Craftsmanship is top notch.

For all the goodies of the F-sport there are also compromises to be have, as Lexus is trying hard to make the Ultimate and the F-sport price more or less the same. Compared to the Ultimate, the F-sport will have a much smaller colour display, won’t have the Nano-e air conditioning, and a more standard audio system, instead of the Mark Levinson that comes equipped in the Ultimate. And adding back the Mark Levinson is not even an option, as Lexus wants to differentiate itself from its European competitors – that the base price includes all the goodies and there is not even an “Option list”. I would say the base price of the GS350 includes possibly the most comprehensive choices of gadgets and luxuries that are not even on the option list of BMW, Audi, or MB.
